GSP’s Corks & Canvas 2010 was tremendously successful! We raised over $100,000 that will help Good Samaritan Project provide essential services to those affected by HIV/AIDS in Kansas City. Over 300 patrons enjoyed a night of seeing old friends and making new ones who have a passion for the mission of Good Samaritan Project.
Special thanks to all of our sponsors, in-kind donors and Friends of Corks, without you we wouldn’t have such a wonderful event.

We are excited to announce that Bent Tree Wine will be the featured wine on the Patron Level at this year’s Corks and Canvas. Bent Tree Wine was created by Mark Gifford a former Chemistry and Biology teacher. After Gifford was laid off and needed to find a new career. He was interested in wine making and with his chemistry background he decided to take the leap and become a wine maker.
Gifford’s wines are not your traditional grape based wines and instead feature flavors like jasmine rice, Jonathan apples and blueberry. The wines are making their way into restaurants including, The Drop, Café Trio, Classic Cup and bluestem. At Café Trio they have created a cocktail called “Lotus” using his Jasmine Rice Wine. The wine can be purchased at a few local stores including Gomer’s Midtown and Cellar Rat.
We are thrilled to have him be a part of Corks and Canvas and think our Patrons will love the uniqueness of these wines.

Mark Giersch has been a Corks artist since 2006 and this year he has donated three wonderful pieces. Giersc
h uses a variety of media including acrylic, oil, pastel, wax and gold leaf. He has always loved the dance between design and color and paints so others can enjoy this dance between the two.
“I like to paint to see what happens with the inter-play of light, design and color. It inspires me to see the World as interactive and playful.”
He draws on nature for inspiration and believes that art should provoke passion and interest. We are excited to have him donate again including this untitled piece. For more art visit our complete gallery online at www.gsp-kc.org.

We are excited to announce this year’s honorary chair will be Russ Ptacek, Investigative Reporter with NBC Action News. Russ began his career in Lawrence as a student reporter on University of Kansas radio station KJHK where he was news director and the host of a news talk show. While still a student at KU, Topeka CBS affiliate WIBW hired Russ as a part-time reporter. He continued his role at the station while attending class.
WIBW then offered Russ a full-time spot as the morning and noon anchor. While at WIBW, Russ’ reporting and investigative skills were recognized repeatedly with regional and national awards. His work also received attention from the networks where frequently contributed on-air reports.
He left WIBW to found an internationally recognized news agency, NewsTV Corporation. Russ’s firm provided consulting, research, reporting and producing services to network news organizations like NBC, CNN, and the BBC. He sold the firm in 2001 and returned to the University of Kansas to finish his degree. After graduating at KU, Russ studied and lived in Germany prior to returning to Kansas City to report for NBC Action News.
In 2009 Russ created Castro Movie Night which benefits the four local AIDS Service Organizations. On the third Thursday of each month Castro features two movies at the Armour Rd Screenland Theater from which half of all tickets sold are given to that months featured ASO.
We are extremely excited to have Russ on board and can’t wait for the event.

For the past 25 years Good Samaritan Project (GSP) has been an integral part of the Kansas City community serving those whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS.. The agency is located in Kansas City, Missouri but serves counties in Kansas as well.
Your support extends far beyond what you may imagine. Good Samaritan Project provides case management and mental health care, vocational support and financial assistance to those in need. Your contributions provide HIV prevention and educational information throughout the Kansas City area, along with free testing. Your support literally touches thousands of lives.
For the past ten years Good Samaritan Project has hosted its annual fundraiser, Corks & Canvas. The event consists of both silent and live auctions, as well as a fantastic array of original works of art by local, regional and national artists and beautifully crafted jewelry. Fine wines and creative gift baskets will also be auctioned to the highest bidder. This year’s event is June 11th at the Boulevard Brewing Company.
One of our corporate sponsors has arranged for a special purchase of fine wine that will be enjoyed by our patrons during the event. We hope that you will contribute $10 to become a member of “Friends of Corks,” which will help purchase the wine served that evening. If you feel you can give more, then your generosity would be greatly appreciated and we will meet our goal more quickly! We hope to have 200+ wine sponsors.
Your name will be included in the event program as “Friends of Corks.” Please go to our website www.gsp-kc.org to contribute and to watch our progress in reaching our goal. You can also mail your donations to:
